Ch. 1 Practice Test

Dear Students,

Don't forget to do the practice test for HW tonight! If you have any questions, post them on the blog!!!!!

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all the parents who came to last night's open house. It was a pleasure meeting each of you. I look forward to working with you to ensure your child's success in Algebra 2. With that being said.....

Your child was given a Ch. 1 Practice Test (33 questions) to do for HW tonight. It is the same test that they took yesterday. However, many of them failed the exam. I returned the answer sheets to the students today so your child should have his/her paper to show you.

In class today, I gave them a copy of my solutions that SHOW HOW to solve the problems, not just the answers. In groups of 4, they looked at my solutions and discussed each problem, line by line, until they understood HOW to solve the problem. They then looked at their papers and located their mistakes for that problem.

I collected the solutions at the end of class. I sent home a blank answer sheet, along with the Ch. 1 Practice Test, for the students to complete for HW. They should be able to complete the test in an hour and 15 minutes as they will only have an hour and 15 minutes for the Ch. 1 Retest on Friday.

I will hand out the solutions again tomorrow so that the students can grade their Ch. 1 Practice Tests. Theoretically, since it is the same exact test they took yesterday and they also reviewed for an hour and a half in class today, ALL of the test scores should improve. I will also allow them to bring the solutions home tomorrow so that they can iron out any remaining misconceptions before taking the Ch. 1 Retest on Friday.

Hopefully, everyone will do better tonight and even better on Friday. I know the students are capable of succeeding. I just need them to believe in themselves.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me by clicking on the "e-mail me" icon on the main page of the blog.

Have a great evening!

Ms. Chan

Algebra 2 Students.....
tsk, tsk, tsk

Many of you were caught very unprepared for today's Ch. 1 Test! Consequently, many of you probably failed. This is not the way we wish to begin the school year. You guys are predominantly juniors and seniors, therefore, the real world is right around the corner.

You cannot afford to get caught unprepared like this in the real world. You get fired in the real world. Professors in college will not hesitate to give you an "F" in the real world. The repo man will come and take your car in the real world. No ifs , ands, or buts.

Stop playin'! You guys know better!

At any rate, I am actually going to be nice. I am going to give you another test tomorrow (same type of problems as today, but with diffrent numbers). Please make sure you take the time to PRACTICE some problems from each section between 1.1-1.5.

Ch. 1 Review

  • (1-10 omit 2,6,7,9)
  • (11-53) odd

Check your answers against the back of the book (pg. 943-944).

Remember, your Ch. 1 Test is tomorrow. If you don't DO the problems, then you won't know what it is that you don't know. There will be a Q & A session for the first 10 minutes of class so if you can't figure out why #53 is is x<-4 or x>6, then you can ask me that question before the test. BUT, you won't know what it is that you don't know if you don't DO the homework AND check your answers!!!!

Post your questions and comments here.

P.S. Don't forget...

the season premiere of Prison Break is on tonight on Ch. 7 at 8 p.m.!!!

Welcome to the Algebra 2 Blog
You have entered the danger zone. Warning! Warning! Warning! (sirens blaring in the background....woop! woop! woop!) You have just arrived at your new blog site. This is the place where I will post your homework assignments, news events, and notices of upcoming tests. It is also a place where you can communicate with your fellow Algebra-icians as you make that slow, treacherous journey through my Algebra 2 class. It is my hope that you will eventually develop the same passion for mathematics as I have. If not, at least gain enough knowledge to perform at a very high standard on the SAT or ACT.

First, you must set up an account. To do that, click on the "comment" link below. Follow the directions to set up your own blog. For your display name, please use the first initial of your first name, a period, and then your entire last name. For example, if your name is John Smith, then your display name would be j.smith.
Anyhoo, use this blog as a means of communicating with your fellow classmates. For instance, if you don't know how to do problem number 12 tonight, then you can post it. Hopefully, someone will read your posting and respond with a hint or an explanation of how to arrive at the answer. Use this blog to your benefit.
Also, there are helpful mathematical links on the RIGHT hand side. Click on each of them to see what they look like. As a matter of fact, click on the College Board link and set up an account. This site is especially helpful for you juniors and seniors. Make sure you ask to have the question of the day sent to your e-mail!
Until then, happy blogging!!!!
Ms. Chan
